The luxury of teaching english as a foreigner is more than just an assumed luxury. It requires hours of patience, dedication, listening, observing and correcting among other things. That is not to say it is not rewarding. The very result of these difficulties, once resolved, are the reward. It can come from the mere remembering of a few specific words of vocabulary, or understanding and responding in the correct context with the correct grammar after days or weeks of misuse and having problems.
El lujo de la enseñanza del inglés siendo extranjero es algo más que un lujo asumido. Requiere horas de paciencia, dedicación, escuchando, observando y corrigiendo, entre otras cosas. Esto no quiere decir que no sea gratificante. El resultado de estas dificultades, una vez resueltas, son la recompensa. Puede provenir del simple recuerdo de unas palabras específicas de vocabulario, o de comprender y responder en el contexto correcto con la gramática correcta después de días o semanas de desuso y de tener complicaciones.
I personally am energised from the easiest conversation before an encounter or a class, that perhaps previously was non-existent. However, there are complications and these can lie fundamentally in student, not from their ability, but from their attitude and willingness. Perhaps for some, aquiring and learning language is almost a second natured affair, but for others it is very much a dedication that requires strong mind, attitude and will.
Personalmente, estoy lleno de energía a partir de la simple conversación que surge antes de un encounter o de una clase, que tal vez antes no existía. Sin embargo, hay complicaciones y estas pueden estar fundamentalmente en el estudiante, no a partir de su capacidad, sino de su actitud y voluntad. Tal vez para algunos, adquirir y aprender un idioma sea casi una segunda tarea agradable, pero para otros es en gran medida una dedicación que requiere de mente fuerte, actitud y voluntad.
The perserverance to actually continue amongst trouble and problems is both the problem and the reward. There is nothing more disheartening than seeing a student having problems choose to not adhere to a learning pattern or acquisition cycle, and instead choose to quit or to simply do something else. As a teacher this can be the greatest fear, knowing you can push, motivate and instruct without confidence that they will continue. This is one thing I try every day to instill, with motivation and pure enjoyment of what I do and I hope that it works!
En realidad, la perseverancia para continuar entre dificultades y mas dificultades es tanto el problema como la recompensa. No hay nada más descorazonador que ver a un estudiante con problemas decidir no adherirse a un patrón de aprendizaje o ciclo de adquisición, y en su lugar optar por abandonar o hacer simplemente algo más. Como profesor esto puede ser el mayor temor, sabiendo que uno puede impulsar, motivar e instruir sin la seguridad de que van a seguir. Esto es algo que trato todos los días de inculcar, con la motivación y el disfrute puro de lo que hago y espero que funcione!
The last and most important part is also learning yourself. Whether it be learning from the students, classes, situations or exercises of how to improve and be a better teacher. For every great or disappointing class there are a million things to be learned from nuances to tasks that can really help make things better in the future for both the student and the teacher. I try every class to take a positive, a negative and an improvement away to make sure I am constantly learning myself as I am improving my teaching abilities and life experience.
La última y más importante parte también está en aprender uno mismo. Ya se trate de aprender de los estudiantes, las clases, las situaciones o los ejercicios de cómo
mejorar y ser un mejor maestro. Para cada clase genial o decepcionante hay un millón de cosas como matices y tareas que aprender que realmente pueden ayudar a mejorar la enseñanza en el futuro, tanto para el estudiante como para el profesor. Cada clase trato de tomar algo positivo, algo negativo y algo a mejorar para asegurarme constantemente de que estoy aprendiendo ya que estoy mejorando mis habilidades de enseñanza y experiencias de vida.
These are just some of the reasons why I love teaching as a foreigner and why I consider it more than just a luxury, but a passion and an important job.
Estas son sólo algunas de las razones por las que me encanta dar clases siendo extranjero y por qué considero que es algo más que un lujo, sino una pasión y un trabajo importante.
