It was a Friday night pretty much just like the rest. A hard day´s work and a few beers at happy hour, and I felt ready to go grab the car. As I got to the parking lot,past a sign, not really minding where I was stepping, I was about to reach my car, when speeding car driven obviously by someone inebriated, or under the influence of drugs, swerved rapidly round the ramp, grazed my leg as its sped by, ignoring my screaming and bellowing at the driver at his irresponsability and recklessness.
Era un viernes a la noche como cualquier otro. Luego de un fuerte día de trabajo y unas pocas cervezas en el Happy Hour, me senti listo para ir a mi coche. Al llegar al estacionamiento, luego de pasar un letrero, sin fijarme donde pisaba, vislumbre mi coche y estaba punto de alcanzarlo cuando un auto veloz que venia cuesta abajo, con alguien ebrio o bajo la influencia de las drogas, dio la vuelta en la rampa y me rozo la pierna a medida que aceleró, ignorando mis gritos e insultos en cuanto lo irresponsable que era al conducir.
As I limped to my car, I felt a little dizzy and had to lie against the side of my car for a moment. I was left alone in a dark Parking lot, after a very real scare, with no witness , and a sore leg no one could pay attention to, just listening to my own laborious heart pounding and my looking at my own steam breath, scented with alcohol. I could see myself on the papers the next day had the car , and it sobered me up inmmediately . And it got me thinking into how reckless and careless we can all be when driving .
Me quedé solo en un estacionamiento oscuro, después de un susto muy real, sin testigos, y con una pierna dolorida a la que nadie podía prestar atención, sólo podía escuchar el golpear laborioso de mi propio corazón y observar mi propio aliento de vapor, perfumado con alcohol. Me veía en los periódicos al día siguiente, y eso me puso sobrio inmediatamente. Me hizo pensar en cuan imprudentes y descuidados todos podemos ser al conducir.
The rate of car accidents in most cities has turned walking and driving on the street into a real hazard, and has come to be an additional stress in life. The amount of bad news that we receive on the Media about car accidents and incidents doesn´t help, either. But what it does do as a collateral plus, is that it has given us a different perspective on what driving responsibly means, and to get sound and in one piece to your destination, however far that might be. One important factor in driving responsibly means reading the English signs correctly and avoiding potential accidents by actually following up on them and asking iwhen in doubt. Take the Stop sign for instance. For many people around the world its meaning is redundant, and many dont know exactly what it entails. But its is actually very important for Americans since it compels Drivers to stop and look sideways before taking a turn. Same goes for Off-Ramps exits. The sighting of these signs and their accurate reading might mean the difference between a a collision or a smooth lane change.
La tasa de accidentes de tráfico en la mayoría de las ciudades ha convertido el caminar y el conducir por la calle en un peligro real, y ha llegado a ser una presión adicional en la vida. La cantidad de malas noticias que recibimos de los medios de comunicación acerca de los accidentes de tráfico e incidentes no ayudan tampoco. Pero lo que sí hace como efecto colateral, es que se nos ha dado una perspectiva diferente sobre lo que significa la responsabilidad de conducir para llegar sano y salvo a su destino, por muy lejos que sea. Un factor importante en el hecho de conducir responsablemente se basa en la correcta lectura de las señales en ingles para evitar posibles accidentes por el simple hecho de seguir las mismas o preguntar en caso de duda. Tomemos por ejemplo la señal de ALTO. Para muchas personas en todo el mundo su significado es redundante, y muchos no saben exactamente lo que implica. Pero en realidad es muy importante para los estadounidenses, ya que obliga a los conductores a detenerse y mirar hacia los lados antes de tomar una curva. Lo mismo sucede con bajadas o salidas de Rampas. El avistamiento de estas señales y su lectura precisa puede significar la diferencia entre una colisión o un cambio de carril sin problemas.
And sometimes it takes more than an accurate reading. One must always learn to read and interpret drivers signs, such as an arm out the passenger window making a moving forward motion. This usually means to surpass the vehicle, yet in countries like Italy, this is just a gesture to stress something you may have done wrong when trying to pass the vehicle, not because the driver is actually letting you pass.The recklessnes that is normally associated to Europeans when driving has also spilled abroad, as many countries in the Anmerican continent exhibit irresponsible behavoiur and lack of signaling on the part of the drivers. The aftermath of these actions compelled several distraught mothers to create M.A.D.D,(Mother Against Drug Drivers), a short lived but quite strong organization in its time, which pushed for tougher laws regarding reckless and drunken drivers. This paved the way for aggressive lobbying in many schools, pushing for a far more thorough approach to what is called in English Driver´s Ed.( Driver´s Education). The pursuit of these courses minimizes the rate of accidents and also creates a self-awarenes of reckless driving and the lack of knowledge of signs, in English or otherwise, to be potentially hazardous.
Y a veces se necesita más que una lectura exacta de las señales. Siempre hay que aprender a leer e interpretar los códigos de los conductores, como por ejemplo sacar un brazo por la ventanilla haciendo movimiento hacia adelante. Esto generalmente significa pasar el vehículo, sin embargo, en países como Italia, esto es sólo un gesto para subrayar algo que se hizo mal al tratar de pasar el vehículo, no porque el conductor le permite pasar.La imprudencia con la que normalmente se asocia a los europeos al conducir también se ha extendido en el extranjero, ya que muchos países del Continente Americano muestran un comportamiento irresponsable por parte de los conductores.Las consecuencias de estas acciones empujaron a varias madres angustiadas a crear MADD (Madres Contra Conductores Drogados) una pequeña organización que llego a ser muy fuerte en su corto tiempo, impulsó las leyes más estrictas con respecto a conductores imprudentes y ebrios. Esto abrió el camino para impulsar agresivamente en muchas escuelas un enfoque mucho más intensivo llamado “Ed el conductor Inglés” (educación para conductores). La búsqueda de estos cursos minimiza la proporción de accidentes y también crea una mayor conciencia sobre el conducir irresponsablemente y sobre la falta de señalizacion, sea en Inglés o en otro idioma, que son potencialmente peligrosos.
All these facts and scenarious played out on my mind as I stood nursing my leg when a sudden thought struck me. I turned my head and limped, these time thrrough the steps etched along the ramp, to where that sign that I gone past stood, and there it was, in clear- cut red and white letters, plain for everyone to see. No walking up or Down Ramps: Use steps. In my stupor, I had read the sign and disregarded, it and I had walked up to my car through the ramp and not the steps, obviously alarming the incoming driver , who must have thought what an irresponsible and reckless be-spectacled person could have gone up the ramp when the sign clearly read that it was forbiddden. Upps!
Todos estos hechos y posibles escenarios jugaron en mi mente mientras acariciaba mi pierna dolorida cuando un repentino pensamiento me golpeó. Volví la cabeza y cojeando, esta vez por los escalones ubicados a lo largo de la rampa, para volver a ver el cartel que habia pasado anteriormente y allí estaba, en claras letras rojas y blancas, para que todos la vean. No subir o bajar las rampas: use los escalones. En mi estupor había leído el letrero, lo descarte y había caminado hasta mi coche por la rampa y no por los escalones, obviamente alarmando al conductor que entraba, y que seguramente debe haber pensado que persona irresponsable e imprudente podria subir la rampa cuando el cartel decia claramente que estaba prohibido.
