A job interview is one of the most drawn-up and intimidating ways of making a first impression. However, it’s also your opportunity to get on an employer’s good side, which can give you a distinct edge over even those applicants whose credentials are better than yours. To prepare for a job interview, use these pointers:
Una entrevista de trabajo es una de las maneras más largas e intimidantes de causar una primera impresión. Sin embargo, también es su oportunidad de conseguir el visto bueno de su empleador, lo cual puede darle una clara ventaja incluso sobre aquellos candidatos cuyas credenciales sean mejores que las suyas. 1 - Research the company's profile and background. Start by looking into their future goals and plans. You should also be ready to talk about the industry, the organization, and the position you are applying for. Use the company's website and newspaper/business magazine articles to gather as much information as possible.

2 - Anticipate questions from the interviewer. It’s best to prepare for a wide variety of questions by thinking about your own career goals, long-term plans, past successes, skills and work strengths, but you should also prepare yourself for deceptively simple questions such as:

What’s your biggest weakness?” is a question that many people fear. Answering this question is a bit of a tightrope walk: while you don’t want to be too honest (“I usually have a hard time staying motivated”), you won’t fool anyone by trying to spin an obviously good quality into a weakness (“I am an extremely responsible and self-demanding worker”). Instead, think of a genuine issue you have as well as ways you have managed to work with/around it (“I’m not naturally a very organized thinker, but I’ve become very organized in my personal space”).
“¿Cuál es su mayor debilidad?” es una pregunta que muchas personas temen. Responder a dicha pregunta es como caminar en la cuerda floja: si bien usted no querrá ser demasiado honesto (“Por lo general tengo dificultades para permanecer motivado”), no engañará a nadie tratando de hacer pasar una evidente buena cualidad en una debilidad (“Soy un empleado muy responsable y auto-exigente”). Por el contrario, piense en un problema real que tiene así como las formas en las que ha logrado trabajar con/en torno a él (“No soy naturalmente un pensador organizado, pero me he vuelto muy organizado en mi espacio de trabajo”).
Where do you see yourself in five years?” is another question that can take you off guard if you don’t see it coming. Your first reaction might be to blurt out: “Working diligently for you, of course!”, but unless you are actually trying to get a job in your chosen career, this probably isn’t a good strategy. If you’re going after a short-term job – or even one that lasts several years – be honest about what your greater aspirations are (for example: starting your own business). Ambition is a very desirable trait in an employee – not to mention honesty.
"¿Dónde se ve a sí mismo en cinco años?” es otra pregunta que lo puede tomar con la guardia baja si no la anticipa. Su primera reacción podría ser la de dejar escapar: “Trabajar diligentemente para usted, por supuesto”, pero a menos que esté tratando de conseguir un puesto en la carrera elegida, esto probablemente no sea una buena estrategia. “Why do you want this job?” is so straightforward it can throw you for a loop. If you’re going into a field you care about, you will have a much easier time answering this. However, if, like many people, you’re just trying to make ends meet, you can answer the question by using it as a way of highlighting your skills: “I outstand in fast-paced, high-pressure situations and would love to have the opportunity to cultivate my talents here”.
"¿Por qué quiere este trabajo?” es una pregunta tan sencilla y directa que puede arrojarlo en un brete. Si usted está por ingresar en un campo laboral que le interesa, entonces le será mucho más sencillo responderla. Sin embargo, si usted, como mucha gente, está simplemente tratando de ganarse la vida, puede sacar provecho de esta pregunta para poner de relieve sus habilidades: “Me destaco en situaciones que requieren un ritmo rápido de resolución y en situaciones de presión. Me encantaría tener la oportunidad de cultivar mi talento aquí”.
3 - Don't be afraid to admit that you don't know something. While you definitely want to seem knowledgeable, don't lie to make it seem like you know something you don't. Admitting not knowing something is much more impressive than lying during your interview. Simply acknowledge that you do not know the answer but you will find out more about it and let them know afterwards.
3 - No tenga miedo de admitir que no sabe algo. Mientras que, sin lugar a dudas, usted quiere parecer bien informado, no mienta para que parezca que supiera algo que en realidad no sabe. Admitir no saber algo causa una mejor impresión que mentir durante su entrevista. Simplemente reconozca que no sabe la respuesta, pero que usted encontrará más información al respecto y se los hará saber después.
4 - Dress for the interview. As a general rule, you should dress for the interview the way you would for the job itself. (If the job is unusually casual, however, you might want to show up in business-casual clothes to be safe.) Choose subdued colors, white or black (women) and blues, browns, grays, black (men). Make sure that your clothes are lint-and wrinkle-free. Men should be clean-shaved and women should avoid strong perfumes.
4 - ¿Cómo vestirse para la entrevista? Como regla general, debe vestirse de la manera que lo haría para el trabajo en sí. (Si el puesto requiere un código de vestimenta casual, sin embargo es posible que desee vestirse con ropa informal de negocios, para estar seguro). Si es mujer, elija colores suaves o blancos y negros; los tonos azules, marrones, grises y negro, si es hombre. Asegúrese que su vestimenta esté libre de arrugas, manchas y pelusas. Los hombres deben estar afeitados y las mujeres deben evitar perfumes fuertes.
5 - Show up in the best possible shape. Make sure you know exactly how to get there and arrive 10 minutes before the scheduled interview time. Go to bed early the day before the interview so that you look rested and healthy on the big day. Bring an extra copy of your cover letter, CV and references in case your interviewer wants to go over any points with you.
5 - Preséntese en la mejor forma posible. Asegúrense de saber exactamente cómo llegar allí y estar 10 minutes antes de la cita. Váyase a la cama temprano la noche anterior al día de la entrevista para que se vea descansado y saludable en el gran día. Lleve una copia extra de su carta de presentación, CV y referencias en caso que su entrevistador quiere repasar los puntos del mismo con usted.
