As soon as I got off the train station, my fears were confirmed..the taxi stand was only accepting local currency, and all I had on me were a handful of dollars, pesos, and a few ancient coins, and in the cold and crowded tarmac, I had to get my wits to obtain change so I could get to my hotel as fast as possible, where I could l blissfully pay by credit card charge.
Tan pronto como baje a la estación, mis miedos fueron confirmados. El puesto de Taxis solo aceptaba la moneda local, y yo solo tenia un puñado de dólares, pesos y unas pocas monedas viejas, y mientras estaba en el frío anden tuve que usar mi sagacidad para poder arribar al hotel, donde afortunadamente podría pagar con tarjeta de crédito.
The issue of finding change in a a foreign city can be a daunting one, since at the moment of changing money, you are aware of the validness of your currency, but no of the one you have to change it to. Unless you are really into the market share and currency ratings, you are not really that aware of how much something costs in another country. That´s s why as soon as you get to an airport or train station, you must always seek the sign EXCHANGE in stands and counters, since that’s where you can get a clear idea of the rate exchange.
El prospecto de encontrar cambio en una ciudad extranjera puede ser muy disuasivo, dado que en ese momento uno conoce la validez del dinero que porta, pero no está claro en cuanto debería cambiarlo. A menos que uno este muy empapado en el mercado de divisas y tasas e de cambio, es difícil estar al tanto de cuanto cuesta todo en otro país. Es por eso que al momento de arribar a un aeropuerto, es necesario buscar con la mirada la estación que muestre el letrero Exchange (Cambio) y preguntar antes de intentar cambiar formalmente en la calle.
One thing you must stay away from is trusting people or waiters right off the street who offer to change the currency comfortably and in a matter of minutes. I say waiters because many of them offer these service at restaurants around the world, and though many of them might act in good faith, that is not always the case.It might look tempting, but since it´s an offhand and casual transaction, no records or receipt of any kind are kept or elaborated, rendering the transaction legally baseless and therefore highly risky. Just because people might be trusting over here in B. A doesn´t mean the same can happen in Singapur, for instance. One more thing to consider is that in some countries, like Brasil to name one, most of the services are paid in Reales, as I found the hard way in my last sojourn there. Not everyone is eager to accept your money or point you in the right direction to change it either.
Una cosa que uno debe evitar es confiar en personas en las calles o meseros para poder cambiar moneda extranjera en moneda local. Digo meseros porque aunque muchos de ellos tienen buenas intenciones y son prácticos en el tema de cambiar moneda, no todos comparten la misma buena fe. Puede llegar a ser muy tentador, pero al ser una transacción informal que no deja ningún recibo ni comprobante, es básicamente una operación ilegal de mucho riesgo. Solo porque algunas personas sean muy de fiar y amables en B.A. no significa que lo mismo pueda ocurrir en Singapur, por poner un ejemplo. En el caso de Brasil, la mayoría de los servicios se abonan en reales, como comprobé en un viaje reciente. No todos están tan dispuestos a aceptar tus dólares o indicarte la dirección adecuada donde si los pueden aceptar.
Un buen truco es amigarse de alguien que ya este viviendo en el país de destino para así de esa manera, al haber confianza mutua y privacidad en el caso de estar en la casa de esta amistad o en el banco, la transacción puede realizarse de manera muy fluida, discreta y sin riesgos. Lo que si recomendamos es nunca presumir ni comentar en el extranjero que se dispone de capital en abundancia de moneda extranjera, ya que siempre atrae atención negativa.
In these day and age, it always pays off to check the local currency exchange rates on the net before you arrive to the country. It might save you time and money and help you to avoid getting swindled. To illustrate this point, a couple of friends went through this unpleasant experience. Once they were at the airport they were driven to the city for 300 dollars, when the right amount was around 6 times less. Use to high cabfares around the world, they did not suspect anything. But once in the city the cab got a flat tire, and the driver transferred them to another taxi that drove them the remaining 10 blocks for 90 dollars more! Needless, to say, when I greeted them at the door they were mightly confused and that left me seething with anger. So, getting one´s bearings when using foreign currency is definetely a must these days. The good thing is that all that idle time at the airport can be put to good use figuring out how much everything is going to cost!!
En este era, siempre es recomendable averiguar el cambio en sitios de internet antes de arribar al país, puesto que ahorran tiempo y dinero y la posibilidad de ser estafado. Para ilustrar este punto, una anécdota: Dos amigos míos arribaron al aeropuerto, y una vez allí, debido a la precariedad del lenguaje y la falta de conocimiento de los valores, enfilaron para la capital con un taxista que les cobro 300 dólares, cuando el monto correcto era 6 veces menor.
Al estar acostumbrados al alto precio de viajes en taxis en otros países, a los viajeros no les pareció sospechoso, hasta que una vez que habían llegado a la ciudad, el taxista sufrió una pinche de rueda, por lo cual transfirió a los viajeros a otro taxi que les cobro 90 dólares más para acercarlo 10 cuadras del lugar de destino donde yo los esperaba. No hace falta mencionar que estaban muy confusos con la experiencia y yo muy indignado por lo sucedido. De modo que orientarse y ubicarse monetariamente al momento de arribar a otro país es esencial en esta era. La buena noticia es que en las largas horas que lleva el viaje a su lugar de destino tienen el tiempo suficiente para averiguar cuanto puede llegar todo a costar en su destino!!!
