As any foreigner living and working in Latin America knows, the culture here is very different from that in other countries like the U.S., Canada, England or Australia. This is mainly due to the laid-back attitudes of the Spanish and Italians (the two biggest ethnic groups in Argentina) regarding work and business.
Como todo extranjero que vive y trabaja en América Latina sabe, la cultura acá es muy distinta a la de otros países como EEUU, Canadá, Inglaterra o Australia. Esto es principalmente debido a las actitudes relajadas de los españoles e italianos (los dos grupos étnicos más grandes de Argentina) con respeto el trabajo y los negocios.
One reason for this is the ancient Spanish tradition of “the siesta”, which started so people could avoid working in the hottest part of the day and relax/have lunch for a couple of hours until the late afternoon. This tradition is still followed in many provinces but obviously not in the big cities where over the past 20 years or so the attitudes have slowly been changing and resembling more and more the Anglo-Saxon way of working.
Una de las razones es la tradición antigua española de “la siesta”, que empezó para que la gente pueda descansar en las horas más calurosas del día y relajarse/almorzarse durante unas horas. Ésta tradición todavía se mantiene en muchas provincias pero obviamente no en las ciudades grandes donde en los últimos 20 años (aproximadamente) las actitudes han cambiado para parecerse más a la manera de trabajar de los Sajones.
Another point related to this is that there are now many American and British companies operating in Argentina with their own work ethic, which is profit, profit, and more profit. This is-and has always been-the number one objective in those countries, far outweighing other concerns like family or employee satisfaction/happiness, which conversely are much more important factors to both bosses and staff here. Something that many managers (myself included) have found when they try to apply their usual methods to their Argentinian staff.
Otro punto/tema relacionado a esto es que hoy en dia hay muchas empresas estadounidenses e inglesas operando en Argentina con sus propias éticas de trabajo: generar ganancias. Esto es-y siempre ha sido-el objetivo mas importante en aquellos países, mucho mas importante que la familia o la satisfacción y la felicidad del staff En la cultura Argentina estos temas se consideran mas importantes que en la cultura sajona. Algo que muchos gerentes (yo incluido) han aprendido cuando intentan aplicar sus métodos a sus empleados argentinos.
Despite the above-mentioned points, the Argentinian way of working is basically the same as it has been for a long time, i.e. relaxed and largely stress-free. However, if the current trend continues or expands (as it will probably do), things will be much different in around 20-30 years from now.
A pesar de los puntos mencionados, la manera argentina de trabajar es básicamente la misma que ha sido por mucho tiempo, es decir, relajada y en general libre de estrés. Sin embargo, si la tendencia actual continua y aumenta (lo que probablemente sucederá), la situación será muy distinta en unos 20-30 años.
In conclusion, for those people who are worried that their easy working lifestyle is going to disappear, relax (pun intended). Real change comes slowly, and nobody can significantly alter 150 years of behaviour in only 5 or 10 years. So keep smiling, stay happy, and above all don’t work too hard!
En conclusión, para la gente que cree que este relajado estilo de vida desaparecerá, relájese. Los cambios significativos se dan en forma lenta, y por lo tanto no se pueden cambiar 150 años de hábitos en solo 5 o 10 años. Así que sonríe, sé feliz, y sobre todo, no trabajes demasiado!
