“All humans have the innate propensity to learn”
That was what the wise man, the man who had relinquished his hereditary position, had said. The word was that he was once the prince of the Maldives and had abdicated; he always responded cryptically when we asked him if that was actually true. It seemed he was ashamed of his past, or somehow fleeing from it, but there was no doubt that he was a true philosopher. You could see in the furrows of his skin, his peaceful gaze.
“Todos los seres humanos tienen la innata tendencia a aprender”
Eso fue lo que el hombre sabio, el hombre quien había abandonado su posición hereditaria, había dicho. La leyenda dice que una vez fue el príncipe de las Maldivas y había abdicado; él siempre respondía misteriosamente cuando le preguntábamos si de hecho había sido cierto. Parecía que se avergonzaba de su pasado, o de alguna manera huía de él, pero no había duda de que era un verdadero filósofo. Podía verse en los surcos de su piel, su mirada tranquila.
Which is why we always remembered that: “ All Humans have the innate propensity to learn”
Es por ello que siempre recordamos que: “ Todos los seres humanos tienen la innata tendencia a aprender”.
One day he even took us to see the Dalai Lama give a conference in Melbourne. It was an unforgettable experience, although I was surprised when, after a young student asked what advice he could give students of Australia to be happy, he had replied laughing "No more homework!".
Un día incluso nos llevó a ver una conferencia del Dalai Lama en Melbourne. Fue una experiencia inolvidable, aunque me sorprendió cuando, luego de que un estudiante le preguntara qué consejo podría darle a los estudiantes de Australia para que fueran felices, él contestara riendo “!No más tareas!”
`Wash your cereal bowl after breakfast´ our teacher also said one day.
We never forgot that either. I always wash my cereal bowl after breakfast now.
“Lava tu tazón de cereal después del desayuno” también dijo un profesor un día.
Tampoco olvidamos eso. Yo siempre lavo mi tazón de cereal después del desayuno ahora.
Finally one day it was time to part ways; he told us he was leaving. But of course in a way he would also stay. Rumour was that he was going back to the Maldives to resume his position as the prince (or maybe his father had died and he was to be the king?)
Finalmente un día llegó la hora de separarnos: nos contó que se iba. Pero, por supuesto, de alguna forma, también se quedaría. Se rumoreaba que él regresaba a las Maldivas para retomar su posición como el príncipe (o tal vez su padre había muerto y él se había convertido en rey?)
I decided to approach him in the afternoon, and I wish I could have asked him more eloquently, but it was the best I could do:
"Why did you come here to teach us in a crummy public school if you are the prince of the Maldives?"
"Because humans have the innate propensity to learn".
I contemplated that phrase once again. And I was satisfied with the response. This man was wise enough to know that he would find happiness teaching and being taught (because it is something reciprocal) rather than being superficially `fulfilled` by a title.
So I smiled, and as he left, he also smiled and said:
"Oh, and of course I have nothing to do with any royal family. I just came here looking for work. But learning is cool".
That was the provenance of his peaceful gaze!
Yo decidí acercarme a él una tarde, y deseo haberle preguntado más elocuentemente, pero fue lo mejor que pude hacer:
“¿Por qué viniste aquí a enseñarnos en una escuela pública de mala muerte, si eres el príncipe de las Maldivas?”
“Porque los seres humanos tienen la innata tendencia a aprender”
Contemplé esa frase una vez más. Y estuve satisfecho con la respuesta. Este hombre fue lo suficientemente sabio para saber que encontraría la felicidad enseñando y siendo enseñado (porque es algo recíproco) en vez de ser superficialmente “satisfecho” por un título.
Así que sonreí, y mientras se iba, también sonrió y dijo:
“Oh, y por cierto no tengo relación alguna con la familia real. Sólo vine aquí buscando trabajo. Pero aprender es muy bueno.”
!Ésa era la procedencia de su mirada tranquila!
